Selected Production Work

The media production process is collaborative, and this list reflects my contributions at various levels of responsibility. I’m happy to discuss my media work in more detail via email.

Transcripts

What began as a collaboration with the Tretter Transgender Oral History Project is now a community audio zine. Check out our most recent call for submissions here, and get involved!

I provide production assistance to Tuck Woodstock’s podcast Gender Reveal on an extremely irregular basis. Episodes include Episode 101: Gender 101, revisited, and Episode 100A: Justin McElroy (aka “Cis Day of Visibility”).

I am a consulting producer on Season Three of KCRW’s podcast Bodies. I have contributed editorial support to all episodes this season. Highlights include “Do Less Harm,” about harm reduction efforts in Appalachia, and “Not Your Average,” about disability advocates’ response to new treatments for achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism.

Harsh Reality (Wondery)

I am a consulting producer on Wondery’s Harsh Reality, a deep dive into the live of Miriam Rivera, the first out trans reality tv star. Team includes host Trace Lysette (Transparent), writers Agnes Borinsky and Eleanor Biggs, and Executive Producer Morgan M. Page.

Seizing Freedom (Virginia Public Media)

I was the first assistant producer on Virginia Public Media’s podcast project Seizing Freedom, which chronicles the story of Long Emancipation from an African American perspective. Work included scripting, historical research, archival labor, and production support.

With Good Reason (Virginia Humanities)

A collaboration between public broadcasting and a state humanities council, With Good Reason is nationally-broadcast radio show reaching over 100,000 listeners weekly. I was a full-time associate producer on the show from 2018-2020. Some the episodes on which I served as Lead Producer include “How To Go Clubbing,” about queer nightlife; “Infrastructures of Power,” about environmental justice; and “Pilgrimage,” about racial reckoning in the U.S. South.

Transcripts podcast, for the Tretter Transgender Oral History Project

I am the showrunner / lead producer for the podcast Transcripts, a show from the Tretter Transgender Oral History Project at the University of Minnesota Libraries. I’m proud of our all-trans crew for putting together a show with explicitly anti-assimilationist trans and anti-racist politics at the center. The first episode features hosts Myrl Beam and Andrea Jenkins in conversation with four amazing activists. Sound design by Ariana Martinez. Learn more about trans activism and the show at bit.ly/transcriptspod.

International Trans Person Helpline (with Arlie Adlington)

My friend and certified radio genius Arlie Adlington and I produced a short piece for the first episode of Antibody, a narrative audio series from The Dig (Jacobin magazine’s podcast). This story is about trans mutual aid, quotidian forms of transnational solidarity, and me being wrong about the British healthcare system. Arlie brilliantly merges recorded tape and Skype tape to convey what it’s like to do medical care via transatlantic video call during a pandemic. Our friend Tuck of Gender Reveal makes a cameo.

Bodies (KCRW), Season Two

I served as a freelance story consultant and story editor on the KCRW podcast Bodies during its second season. My work included reading draft scripts and reviewing audiotape, as well as participating in collective edits with showrunners, producers, and guest editors. As a trans equity consultant, my goal was to bring a trans lens to the show’s discussions of gender and embodiment. This season appeared on many “best of” lists and was featured in LA Review of Books’ Podcast Review.

Storycorps, Stonewall OutLoud, 50th Anniversary Podcast Series

To honor the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, StoryCorps asked people across the country to pick up their mobile devices and use the StoryCorps App to record the stories of LGBTQ people born before the Stonewall Riots. These interviews were released as a special podcast series. As a story consultant, I worked with each script to ensure accuracy and cultural sensitivity. The series was nominated for a Peabody Award.

Examining Justice, Episode 3: The Quest for Reproductive Justice in Georgia.

With Policy Fellow and host Kyera Singleton, I produced an episode of Examining Justice about HB 481 — Georgia’s abortion ban — and how this bill would impact the most vulnerable women in Georgia. Through interviews with Andrea Young, Kosha Tucker, Christopher Bruce, and Kwajelyn Jackson, we explore how the personal has always been political, unpacking the importance of reproductive justice in Georgia.

Examining Justice, Episode 1: The Fight For Dignity

With Policy Fellow and host Kyera Singleton, I produced the first episode of the ACLU of Georgia’s new podcast, Examining Justice. We tell the story of Pamela Winn, who was shackled while pregnant in a Georgia prison, and subsequent efforts to change conditions for women in the state’s correctional facilities.

How to Go Clubbing

Bars, nightclubs, dance, and music have long held a special place in LGBTQ culture. But even as shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and Pose bring that culture into the mainstream, real-life gay bars and clubs are shuttering.

Infrastructures of Power

Natural gas production has been ramping up. How do we balance environmental concerns and the public good?

A full-hour radio episode considering infrastructure, science, and society.

Pilgrimage

In 1898, a black man named John Henry James was lynched in Charlottesville, Virginia, right across the street from what is now With Good Reason’s studios.

Content warning: this episode includes vivid descriptions of lynching, racial terror, and police brutality.
